Hello Everyone. I appreciate you visiting the site and reading my blog; it’s good to see those pretty eyes again.
Happy new month! Welcome to the month of June! I can’t believe we have already gone half of the year; it’s just like yesterday it was the month of January now here is June. Crazy things have been happening; some I realized are too personal for me to share yet, while others I’m just not mentally ready to share in general, but trust me, the gist is Dey!
I’m sure most of you are intrigued by the title of this week’s post, but I thought to do something fun and share with you all the story of a couple I met some days ago, so for their own privacy purposes, I would not be using their real names. I got permission to share their experience but be discreet about it, so the couple’s names are Samantha and Jude.
Story, story, story! Once upon a time, time, time!
Samantha and Jude were a young couple who were planning on moving in together and had gotten a place together. So on the faithful weekend when they were planning on moving, they were going to pick up the bed and stuff they had bought for their apartment. They reached the shop and checked that all they bought was complete, then they walked out to get a cab. Little did they know that that walk would be the end of it.
So on walking a few steps out of the store, they were stopped and searched by the Nigerian police. This is very illegal, but in Nigeria it is a normal way of life. Jude, upon seeing the police, immediately approached them, emptying the contents of his pockets, not knowing that his girlfriend Samantha was in possession of marijuana in her bag. Immediately after the police saw the marijuana in Samantha’s possession, they immediately held both of them and put them into the bus.
Samantha, on entering the bus, was panicking already; this was not her first rodeo with the Nigerian police; the same was true for Jude, but she was just nervous because she was being taken to the station, as she had been caught with marijuana, which isn’t legal in Nigeria, and the Nigerian police are always so happy to catch and use that opportunity to extort money from the youth. Once in the bus, one of the officers began to search the contents of Samantha’s bag, uncovering a lighter, a crusher, and a rolled joint. Another officer seated in front asked that she hand over her phone immediately. Jude was also asked to hand over his phone, but he refused, claiming that he was not caught with any unlawful item, so he does not know why he is being asked to hand over his phone.
The officers decided to let that be and drove them to the station. Immediately they got there, they were detained and taken into the cell. It was a scary experience for Samantha, being told to take off her slippers and jewelry and being locked behind bars. For Jude, it was a normal rally, for this was not his first rodeo with the police or being in detention. Jude was more worried for Samantha, well aware that this was her first time and scared of how she was feeling. He immediately got himself out with the excuse of a medical condition so he could try and bail her out. It was easy for him to be let out because he was not found with any evidence during the illegal stop and search.
Samantha, being on the inside, was losing her mind. Not knowing that with Nigerian police, you can never be right, Samantha started letting the police know they did an unlawful act and how she was not given proper rights, and this upset the police men who arrested her, in fact the whole station, so while Jude was begging for her release, the police men were bent on teaching Samantha a lesson for the threats she threw at them and that they would charge her to court. Samantha was ready for it, knowing they did an illegal stop and search, and she kept on with her stand. Jude did all he could to get Samantha out of the cell that day, but it was all to no avail, for Samantha’s words had hurt the police station badly, so they punished her and let her sleep in the cell. All the female police kept balancing her mouth for putting her in trouble and told her normally females don’t stay in the cell.
Samantha’s worst nightmare had come true; she was locked up behind bars! She slowly came to realize she was not getting out and was spending the night when the moon started shining on her from the cell. To cut a long story short, Jude had to get his army friend involved for Samantha to be released the next day because the arresting officer was bent on proving a point to her by arresting her and charging her to court. So Samantha was bailed out with a whopping sum of N40,00 (forty thousand naira only). and once she was let out, she was glad to be free again and not be behind bars.
So let’s analyze this story together. Do you think Samantha should not have stood up to the police? Do you think she should have just been calm and begged? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section!
